The Rupture

Also called: Rupture, the Tear, the First Rupture (specifically Ojo del Diablo's origin)

Definition: The historical event that tore the Veil and let the Current pour into the world. Caused by the Consortium's deep drilling for ghost-rock; the first tear opened at Ojo del Diablo. Followed by 20 years of chaos (the Long Silence) before fragile order returned.

The Rupture is the event that broke the world. It is the dividing line between the Gilded Age (the era before, remembered only in fragments) and the present: the post-Rupture Frontier.

The cause: The Orvain Consortium’s industrial drilling pierced a layer of metaphysical bedrock, breaching the barrier between Here and There. The mines went too deep, chasing veins of ghost-rock and strange humming silver. The rails stretched too far, piercing the skin of the world in places that were meant to remain whole.

The Flickers came first: shadows that moved without people, storms that rained salt, sleepers waking in languages dead civilizations hadn’t invented yet.

Then the Rupture itself. The geography of the Frontier buckled. Mountains rose overnight, jagged and wrong. Lakes drained into swirling sinkholes (Ojo del Diablo, the site of the First Rupture). The sky shifted permanently into bruised twilight purple and sickly orange.

The Eastern government drew the Quarantine Line and declared everything west of it to be the Lost Territories. The Long Silence followed: twenty years of chaos in which the dead rose, animals twisted, society collapsed into desperate pockets, and humanity nearly flickered out. The Frontier survived because we are stubborn creatures. Walls of iron. Lines of salt. Deals with the new powers.

The Rupture is not a single tear that can be undone. The Veil cannot be made whole again. The work of the Bastion Souls (and the Circle of Ash’s longer game) is to seal individual breaches, slow the Current’s seepage, and accept that the Frontier is an order built on bones.

(See the Veil for the barrier itself, and the Current for what bleeds through.)
