Ojo del Diablo
"A circular sinkhole lake twenty miles wide, in the heart of the Scorchveil. The water is black and motionless. It reflects stars that don't match the sky overhead."
- Region
- The Scorchveil
- Type
- Stable Breach
- Danger
- Extreme
This is the site of the First Rupture — the original tear where the Veil was first opened, and the wound from which everything else has bled. The Devil’s Eye has never closed. It never will.
Travelers use the Ojo for navigation because it is the only feature large enough to see through the Scorchveil’s heat-haze. Most travelers who reach its shore do not return. Those who do return wrong.
Environmental Effects
| Effect | Mechanic |
|---|---|
| Dead Zone | Animals refuse to approach within 1 mile. Mounts must be tethered and blindfolded. |
| Cold | Temperature drops to freezing within 100m of the edge, even at noon. |
| Time Dilation | 1 hour at the shore = 1 day in the outside world. ECHO TN 13 to notice time passing. |
| Tension Amplifier | The Tension Pool gains +1 die for every hour spent at the Eye. |
Legends
Locals throw offerings into the water — coins, guns, fingers — hoping the Devil looks away. Retrieving an offering is said to grant a wish. The price is always ironic tragedy.
Mechanical Use
- Powerful artifacts may be found at the edge (GM discretion).
- Entering the water is death. No save. The traveler is dissolved into the Current; their soul rejoins the original tear.
- Seers gain +2 dice to prophecy-related checks near the Eye, but take 1 Erosion per use. The Eye sees clearly. It also sees back.
GM Notes
Ojo del Diablo is the Frontier’s nuclear option for plot stakes — a place where the answer to “what is the Veil?” is closest to retrievable. It should be treated as the most dangerous fixed location on the map. A Circle of Ash expedition that returns from the Eye usually returns short members, and the survivors are different.
The Fading Ward plot hook for Palomera (replacement Ley-Crystal must be retrieved from the Eye) is one of the canonical ways to bring PCs here. Most other paths in are paid in blood.
