Flesh Shapers manipulate living tissue — knitting wounds, accelerating healing, and reshaping flesh into new configurations. Their power is visceral, intimate, and deeply unsettling to witness. The sounds alone — wet tearing, grinding bone, the pop of resetting joints — are enough to turn strong stomachs.

No-Reactions Principle — Structural Identity

Flesh Shapers are the proactive discipline. Across all 50 Talents, none are Tempo 0 (Reaction). This is intentional — flesh sculpting requires time, intent, and deliberate concentration. A Flesh Shaper cannot dodge a bullet, but they can heal it after. They commit and live with the consequences.

This creates a meaningful asymmetry with Seer (the reactive discipline) and a complementary partnership: a party with both has perfect preparation AND perfect response.

The Red Sacrament Clarification

The Red Sacrament (R5) has a trigger condition (“a creature within Touch range has just died within 1 round”) but is Tempo 5, not Tempo 0. It does not violate the No-Reactions principle. It’s a triggered action with full Channeling time, not a free Reaction — the Flesh Shaper still spends 5 Ticks performing the conversion, during which they can be interrupted, attacked, or Disrupted normally.

Cross-Discipline Interactions — Catalog

These references honor the Bastion Soul Tier-Removal Hierarchy. Each Flesh Shaper effect is removed only by Bastion Soul Talents of equal or higher Rank. This catalog is the canonical reference for how Bastion Souls counter Flesh Shaper output.

Permanent Modifications (Not Removable by Anti-Psionic Talents)

Older Biosculpts and any healed Adaptive Evolutions become part of the body. Bastion Soul Talents cannot strip them away — only another Flesh Shaper of equal or greater skill can reverse the modification. This distinction is important: a fresh Biosculpt on an enemy can be erased; a year-old one is permanent biology.

Area / Network Effects

  • Pandemic (R4) — Reality Anchor (BS R4) or higher stops transmission within its radius. Null Zone (BS R3) can suppress within its area but does not stop transmission outside the zone.
  • Hivemind Pulse (R4) — Bastion Souls within range create “dead zones” in the biological web (sensory only — no Talent required, just their presence).

Long-Form Constructs

  • Symbiote (R5) — Killable only by The Citadel (BS R5) or Reality Anchor (BS R4) sustained over multiple Ticks. Lower-Rank Bastion Soul Talents cannot destroy a Symbiote.

Same-Discipline Cures

  • Plague Touch (R3) — Curable by Purge (FS R2) within the same discipline. Pandemic, however, propagates beyond Purge’s per-target scope — the only true counters are Reality Anchor or destroying the initial source.

Iron Will Does Not Defend Against Biological Reads

The Bastion Soul’s mental fortress doesn’t help against a finger on the carotid artery. Iron Will (BS R1) does NOT defend against:

  • Vital Read (FS R1 — reads heart rate, micro-expressions)
  • Empathic Anatomy (FS R1 — reads physical sensation)
  • Boil Blood (FS R3 — targets the circulatory system directly)
  • Any Flesh Shaper effect that targets the body rather than the mind

This is one of the most important inter-discipline notes in the game. A party that thinks Iron Will is universal psychic armor learns otherwise the first time a Flesh Shaper diagnoses their captain’s gout.

Key Mechanical Notes

  • No Reactions. Flesh Shapers commit to actions and live with consequences. They are the proactive discipline. (The Red Sacrament is not an exception — see above.)
  • Attribute caps. Adrenal Spike (R2) and Apex Predator (R4) both cap at Attribute 5 max from the Talent. This keeps both below R5 Apotheosis (Attribute 6). Consistent with Bastion Soul’s Titan Form ceiling.
  • Damage caps. Boil Blood (R3) capped at +2 from Steps (max 6 damage on failure) to stay within R3 ceiling. Life Leech (R4) capped at 9 damage at full Steps — R4 single-target ceiling.
  • The Suicide Limit applies to mind-control (Mindweaver) but NOT to body-control (Flesh Shaper). The Wet Strings (R3) and Blood Puppet (R4) can force the target to harm themselves. The Flesh Shaper isn’t influencing will — they’re pulling muscles.
  • Permanent modifications stack with hard caps. 3 Biosculpts + 2 Adaptive Evolutions = 5 maximum permanent modifications per character. Each beyond the first inflicts permanent Erosion.
  • Mass Mend’s Strain conversion can kill the caster if they overcommit to healing. Strain that exceeds the cap converts to HP damage. A Flesh Shaper who Mass Mends a full party of injured allies may drop themselves to 0 HP. This is the discipline’s most dangerous self-cost mechanic.
  • Caster’s Tax (Knit Flesh, Regeneration, Blood Rouse, Mass Mend). These healing Talents charge the caster Strain — sometimes per HP healed, sometimes per turn. The Flesh Shaper literally bears the burden. Body prose explains each Talent’s specific Tax; frontmatter cost shows only the Channeling cost.
